With its long-established universities and strong academic infrastructure, Austria is one of the most prestigious countries in Europe for students who want to pursue a doctorate. Candidates who have completed a Master's degree in Turkey and wish to do a doctorate in Austria need to provide evidence of certain academic and language qualifications.
To apply for a doctorate in Austria, candidates are expected to show that they have
successfully completed a Master's programme,
graduated from a university recognised by YÖK (Turkey's Council of Higher Education)
and have proficiency in German.
German Proficiency and Preparatory Courses
Students without sufficient German are required to attend the German language courses recommended by the institution they have applied to. These preparatory programmes usually last two semesters, and students who complete the course successfully gain the right to final enrolment in the doctoral programme.
Structure of Doctoral Studies
Doctoral studies in Austria are based on an original, scholarly research project that meets defined academic standards. The doctorate is awarded once the relevant academic board is satisfied that the research makes a contribution to the scientific community.
The process usually consists of the following stages:
- Defining and approving the thesis topic
- Writing the thesis
- Assessment under the supervision of a thesis committee
- Thesis defence
Together, these stages make up the doctoral process.
Duration and PhD Programmes
Completing a doctorate in Austria takes 2 to 3 years on average. The most common type of doctorate is the Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy). Being awarded a doctorate means that the candidate's academic competence is recognised as equivalent at an international level by the awarding university and its academics.
As the topics, content and admission requirements of doctoral programmes can vary by university and department, every application has its own specific requirements.
Why Professional Support Matters

Applications made with the right guidance help students achieve significant gains, both financially and personally.
