With its 26 cantons and its multilingual, multicultural character, Switzerland offers international students a unique place to study. Most higher education institutions are state-run, and each canton runs its own education system. Teaching languages are German, French, Italian and English, depending on the region in which a university is located.

Swiss higher education institutions fall into three main categories: universities, universities of applied sciences and universities of teacher education. Tuition fees at public universities are kept low, while private universities offer world-class education, particularly in tourism, banking, international business and marketing. Bachelor's programmes usually last 3 years and, under the Bologna Process, lead on to Master's programmes. The academic year is divided into an autumn (winter) semester and a spring (summer) semester: the autumn semester begins in October, and the spring semester begins in March or April and ends in July.
